The Astrology of Grief

The Stars and Sorrow

Learning to navigate grief and loss can be scary and overwhelming. Over many years of working with clients, I have witnessed them try to understand and come to terms with their suffering.

There are many traditional means of support available. Astrology, however, offers a unique lens to view, explore and better understand the nature of grief.

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom.

The Role of Water Signs

aThe water signs—Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces—are linked to our emotions. These signs are present in everyone’s chart.

Individuals with one or more planets in the water signs tend to be more sensitive and can feel grief more deeply.

The water signs amplify intuition and empathy and may heighten a person’s emotional sensitivity when prominent in the birth chart.

People with strong water placements often experience grief more intensely and, at the same time, possess a remarkable capacity for healing and transformation.

Saturn: The Taskmaster

Saturn is the planet that rules over structure, discipline, life lessons and loss. It is a crucial planet to help us understand how an individual experiences and processes grief.

Saturnian influences can manifest as feelings of isolation, restriction, and heaviness. These emotions are often associated with loss. Planetary transits involving Saturn can be challenging.  It rules over periods of reflection and growth through the experience of grief.

Pluto: Transformation and Renewal

Pluto governs the cycle of life, death, and transformation. It also represents the energies of power over, loss of power and empowerment.

When in a relationship with any personal planets or sensitive points in the natal chart, Pluto can signal times of profound transformation and experiences of loss.

The process of grieving under Pluto’s influence involves deep, transformative healing. It can lead to personal renewal and empowerment. Pluto can bring the promise of new life after loss.

Chiron: The Wounded Healer

Chiron is an asteroid that orbits between Saturn and Uranus. It points to our deepest wounds and healing potential in the birth chart.

When activated by transit or progression, Chiron can represent times when past wounds and grief resurface. These transits mark periods that are good for self-healing, developing empathy and compassion for others.

Moon Phases and Eclipses

The Moon governs our emotions and inner world. Its phases and eclipses can impact how we experience and process grief.

Full Moons and Lunar Eclipses can bring suppressed feelings to the surface. At the same time, New Moons can offer an opportunity to set our intentions for emotional healing and renewal.

Solar Return Chart

The Solar Return chart is calculated every year on your birthday. It can provide insights into the themes and challenges for the year ahead. This includes any grief or loss a person might experience in the coming year.

Planetary placements and their relationship to each other in this chart highlight the areas of life that will be in focus from one birthday to the next.

Transpersonal Planets and Collective Grief

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are the transpersonal planets that connect us to collective experiences and trends.

Their influence can be observed in collective grief. This is when events in society create shared experiences of loss and mourning. These events can shape generational narratives.

An example of this would be the death of Princess Diana in August 1997, which initiated a global sense of loss and outpouring of grief worldwide.

Spiritual Perspective and Astrology

In astrology, grief is a process and a spiritual journey. It invites you to deepen your self-reflection, develop compassion and offers a better understanding of the human experience.

Astrology provides a roadmap through the interpretation of your birth chart. Astrology can guide you through the complexities of grief and direct you toward healing and spiritual growth. The astrology of grief offers insights into how each individual experiences and navigates loss uniquely.

By exploring the planetary influences and astrological symbolism, grief’s psycho-spiritual dimensions are understood.  Astrology can help us support ourselves and others on the journey toward healing and transformation.
